I has been years since my creative spirit raged but somehow, these last few months, I have become the starving artist type personality of my youth again. I am reminded of myself when I was a young painter in my 20’s living in a co-op loft space high above the docks in Vancouver BC painting 12 hours a day.
It all started last January when I decided to go to the wholesale Jewelry show at the Blaisdale in Honolulu. I hadn’t been in years, I still made the odd piece of jewelry from my inventory but I had let my accounts flounder and rarely even went down to my studio.
An upturn in my health and the subsequent energy boost I got from feeling better kickstarted a need to express my creativity again. I began by updating my inventory and checking the market for trends.
To my surprise my style of delicate classy gemstone earrings and long flowing pendant necklaces was not only in style but all the rage.
I tried my hand at creating several simple pieces and realized that I had forgotten nothing and still had a lot of good ideas. I loved making the pieces and it made me happy to think how happy my creations would make the new owners.
Gemstones and crystals hold healing vibrations. There are whole books written about the various stones and how they assist personal transformation with their energies. For example the pearl is universally known to have cleansing properties and should always be warn when fasting or cleaning house. Rose quarts is the heart stone and helps mend a broken heart. Larimar, one of my favorite stones, is the stone of communication and, the saying goes, if you are having a fight with your partner you should take off all your clothes and put on all your larimar!
Gradually I put together a collection and was ready to find my market.
My search led me to three possibilities and I immediately started working with two of these stores .
The first two stores I chose were Denim Patch clothing and Island Hemp and cotton.
I have to admit I knew both the owners beforehand Sierra the owner of Denim Patch is a friend of my daughters and I have been a patron of her bikini store for a couple of years. Nancy from Island Hemp and Cotton has been a casual friend since the 1990’s when I had my own stores Art To Wear in kapaa town. She has operated her store for years and created a beautiful cool environment full of treasures.
Both ladies loved my work and took it immediatly into their inventroy.
What pleasantly surprised me was the incredible success they had from the get go with my creations. Two weeks after dropping inventory at their locations, I had a nice check in my hands form both owners.
Elated I doubled my efforts and increased the inventories and the second checks were even bigger.
I returned to the blaisdale for the September wholesale Jewelry show and purchased more fine gems. crystals and gem stone chains.
Since then I have been upgrading my collections at the two stores in preparation for the Christmas sales season.
Now I am an artist again full time working in my studio daily producing beautiful pieces. My creative juices are flowing and I feel fulfilled to be working at my calling again.
I have learned that being even semi-retired did not work for me I am much happier and feel more fulfilled when i’m being creative everyday.
Funny that after so many years I am back in the same mindset I had as a young artist. Life is art and art is life I guess there is rally know way to skate on your calling.
